Evercade News (issue 1)

Despite the number of carts already available, we’re still relatively early on in the lifespan of the Evercade system. After all, it’s been less than a year since the release of the VS and two since the Handheld. That means there’s still plenty to come – as you can see from the latest announcements below.

Arcade Carts 5-8

The next two carts in the Arcade line of carts were released shortly before this issue went to print. Numbered 5 and 6 respectively, the Jaleco Arcade 1 and Gaelco Arcade 2 collections include a further 14 games making their first appearance on the system. Initial highlights on the Jaleco collection include 64th Street: A Detective Story, Saint Dragon and EDF Earth Defense Force. Meanwhile, the Gaelco 2 collection looks set to impress with World Rally 2, Big Karnak and Touch and Go. Full reviews of both carts will feature in Issue 2.

Announced alongside the Evercade EXP, Arcade carts 7 and 8 will feature the first collections from Irem and Toaplan and include another 14 games in total. The Irem collection includes classic shoot-em-up R-Type, underwater shooter In The Hunt, and a first home release of Lightning Swords. Over on the Toaplan cart, games include Tiger-Heli, Flying Shark, Truxton and falling block puzzle game Teki Paki.

First native game release

Also coming later this year is the first cart to feature a game built natively for the Evercade hardware, as opposed to emulated as per all the other carts released to date. The dual cart features the games Alwa’s Awakening (8-Bit Edition) and Cathedral, the latter being the first natively built game on the system. Saves will work a little differently than normal (as in, there are no standard Evercade save states), but never fear – the game will have its own internal saving system.

Home Computers range launch

A final piece of news for 2022 saw the announcement of The C64 Collection 1. Starting a new range of carts featuring games released on home computers, this cart will include 14 games and the box art has a fancy blue spine. This includes Impossible Mission, Summer Games and Winter Games, Lee (his first name might be Bruce…), and The Movie Monster Game. In other words, there’s lots still to look forward to!
